Bristol Public Library's — Health Education Series: 2014 Discusses Obesity

November 11, 2014

The Bristol Public Library’s November event will take a look at the epidemic of obesity and its effects on our region. “Obesity: The Weight of the Matter in Tennessee” will be presented by Dr. Deborah Slawson on November 13th at 6:30 PM in the J. Henry Kegley Meeting Room of the BPL.

An expert in school and community-based health promotion planning, research, and evaluation, Dr. Deborah Leachman Slawson has published and presented extensively on issues related to health and wellness in youth. She brings insights gleaned from years of experience as a registered dietician nutritionist, researcher, and program evaluator. She is currently an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Community and Behavioral Health in the College of Public Health at East Tennessee State University. She was the primary investigator for the evaluation of Coordinated School Health for Tennessee through June 2010, successfully managing an evaluation for the initial statewide rollout of that initiative. Further, she is the Principal Investigator of a federally funded obesity prevention research project that has engaged Coordinated School health coordinators across Northeast Tennessee in carrying out interventions in regional high schools.

The Health Education Series:2014 is produced as a partnership between the Quillen College of Medicine, the Bristol Family Physicians, Wellmont Health Systems, and the Bristol Public Library. Presented at 6:30 PM on the second Thursday of each month March through December, the series provides experts in many areas of public health and medicine.
