Celebrate Bristol Announces Star-Spangled Weekend Schedule

June 25, 2012

Non-profit organization Celebrate Bristol is proud to announce the upcoming schedule for Bristol’s annual Star-Spangled Weekend. Each year the organization partners with local organizations for a slate of family friendly events to celebrate America’s Independence. This year’s event is scheduled for June 28-30 and will include a traditional schedule in downtown Bristol and at Boyce Cox Field. Star-Spangled weekend occurs each July 4 weekend and provides free parade entry, food and music to all those in attendance due to the strong support of local sponsors.

The featured musician’s for 2012 will be Box Set, a local band built around the great and obscure sounds of the 60’s and 70’s. They will be preceded by the ever-popular Bristol Virginia Senior Showchoir. While in Cumberland Square Park you can enjoy pizza, chips and water, great music, book-signings by local authors and children’s inflatables. It’s a traditional patriotic block party in downtown Bristol!

The weekend begins early on Thursday evening with BVU’s annual Music & Movies in the Park in Cumberland Square Park. Music begins at 6:30pm, followed by the movie, Dolphin Tale, which begins at 9:00pm. Music & Movies will continue each Thursday through the month of July. Each evening, along with great White Sox baseball, there will be family fun with Watermelon, Hot Dog and Apple Pie eating contests at Boyce Cox Field. On Friday evening come downtown to the annual Appalachian Region AACA Antique Car Show in the Tri-Summit Parking lot, 5:00pm through 9:00pm.

Saturday June 30 begins early with Bristol’s annual Independence Parade, beginning at 10:00am. Any business, non-profit organization, church group, neighborhood or resident is welcome to enter a float in this city event. Line-up begins at 8:00am on Bob Morrison Blvd entering on Euclid Avenue. It’s a great start to the city-wide gathering at Cumberland Square Park for food provided by Bristol’s business community at 11:00am. There will be children’s inflatables, music featured by Box Set and the Bristol Virginia Senior Showchoir, book signings by local authors, local vendors, vision and hearing tests and a blood drive by Marsh Regional Blood Center. Winners of the Miss Celebrate Bristol Photogenic contest will be announced on the Cumberland Square Stage at 12 noon.

The Bristol Lion’s Club has scheduled the second annual Rubber Ducky Race to be held in Beaver Creek next to festivities at Cumberland Square Park following the Independence Parade. This year there will be 1,500 ducks available to purchase for this contest. The first prize is a new Schwinn Bicycle; second prize is a $100 Gas Card among dozens of other prizes. You don’t have to be present at the duck race to enter or win these great prizes. Contact a Lion’s Club member to purchase your ducky or contact Minuteman Press located on Volunteer Parkway. If motorcycles are your interest, join-in the second annual Celebrate Bristol Motorcycle Poker and Bug Run through the countryside of Sullivan County. Registration begins following the parade at 11:00am at the Bristol Rhythm & Roots parking lot on State Street.

The evening concludes with Celebrate Bristol Night at Gene Malcolm Stadium for the Bristol White Sox verses Princeton Rays, followed by Fireworks by Pepsi. Celebrate Bristol is expecting packed crowds to this year’s ballgame, which follows the largest attendance ever at the ballpark the past three years, with over 3,000 fans attending. Enjoy great American family fun with fantastic baseball, an Apple Pie eating contest and fireworks.

According to Tim Buchanan, chairman of Celebrate Bristol, “it’s the partnerships in Bristol that make successful celebrations happen”. He continued, “This weekend has something for every member of the family”. There’s nothing more American than baseball, apple pie, a parade, antique cars, fireworks, and Bristol has it all for this year’s Star-Spangled Weekend. It is because of the support of our sponsors that there is a Star-Spangled Weekend.
