ETSU at The Paramount

April 05, 2011

On Thursday, April 7th, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. East Tennessee State University’s Bluegrass, Old Time, Country Music, and Celtic bands take the stage at the Paramount Center for the Arts in Historic Downtown Bristol for “CELEBRATION 2011.” The annual concert, now in its eighth year, showcases the extraordinary talents of the ETSU program’s students.

Thanks to ETSU student Yuiko Inoue and her connection to the Bluegrass, Old Time, and Country Music program, proceeds from this year’s concert will go to the Tohoku University Bluegrass Club. Tohoku University is in Sendai, in northeast Japan. Club members will use their best judgment to see that proceeds reach their most-in-need fellow citizens. Readers may recall seeing the March 11th tsunami as it overwhelmed Sendai Airport.

Offering the world’s first Bachelor of Arts in Bluegrass, Old Time, and Country Music, East Tennessee State University is widely considered the home of bluegrass music in higher education. Since 1982, students from all over the world have learned the music of the mountains on the ETSU campus.

This year, fifteen student bands will perform, as will members of the ETSU teaching faculty. The Boxcars, featuring the program’s mandolin instructor and five time Grammy Award winning recording artist and entertainer Adam Steffey, are this year’s special guests.

Tickets for this year’s concert are $14 for adults and $10 for students, children and senior citizens over 65. For ticket availability call the Paramount box office at (423) 274-8920. For more information about the Bluegrass, Old Time, and Country Music Program at ETSU call (423) 439-7072.
