New Theatre Ensemble Presents Inaugural Production at CityMug

May 27, 2013

The Last Call Players, a new theatre ensemble founded in 2013, announces their first production "Animals Out Of Paper" by Pulitzer Prize winner Rajiv Joseph. The production will run Thursday, May 30-Saturday, June 1 at 8:30 pm at the second floor space above CityMug on State Street, Bristol, VA. Tickets are available at www.lastcallplayers.com and at the door. Tickets are $10.00 for general admission and $5.00 for students at the door. "Animals Out Of Paper" premiered in New York City in 2008 and was written by Rajiv Joseph, a recent Pulitzer Prize winner for his play "Bengal Tiger at the Bagdad Zoo." The New York Times states "Mr. Joseph’s observant, pitch-perfect script seems modest at first but is really quite ambitious, dealing ruthlessly (except in the semi-upbeat ending) with the fragility of happiness, the tragedy of impulsiveness and the tenuousness of hope." The story centers on Ilana, played by Liz Dollar, an origami artist who is getting divorced, loses her long time dog, and can't bring herself to fold anymore paper. Enter Andy, played by Ian Charles, a high school math teacher and origami enthusiast who admires Ilana's work. He wants to introduce her to his student Suresh, played by Jenson Lavallee, a brilliant but troubled young man who is an origami genius. When Ilana takes Suresh on as an apprentice the drama "unfolds" as they learn from each other.

The Last Call Players is an actor's ensemble founded with the goal of bringing new stories about human relationships from new playwrights to the audience in an intimate and immersive environment. The focus is on the connection between the audience and the story with nothing getting in the way of that contact. Originating members Ian Charles, Liz Dollar, and Jenson Lavallee came together with the promise to serve the audience, tell the story, and be fearless. The three are not strangers. Dollar is an associate professor of theatre at King University and Charles and Lavallee are recent graduates from the program. "It was time to put my money where my mouth was," states Liz Dollar. "I have been encouraging my students for years to make theatre without limits, but I needed to do it, too."
