Cities Recognize Small Business Saturday Through Joint Proclamation

In an effort to recognize the upcoming Small Business Saturday event being held in the Bristol community the Saturday after Thanksgiving, a joint proclamation was made and signed by Mayor Margaret Feierabend and Mayor Neal Osborne during the November 5th Bristol, Tennessee Council Meeting. The proclamation was accepted by Believe in Bristol Executive Director, Maggie Elliott, and Believe in Bristol Board President, Ken Monyak.

Small business reports supplied by American Express, the nationwide sponsor for Small Business Saturday, show that there are currently more than 30 million small businesses located throughout the United States, representing 99.7 percent of all businesses with employees in the U.S. In addition, small businesses are responsible for more than 64 percent of net new jobs created over the past 20 years.

Other statistics relating to Small Business Saturday: small businesses employ 49.2 percent of the employees in the United States’ private sector; 92 percent of small business owners say Small Business Saturday helps their business stand out during the busy holiday shopping season; 70 percent of consumers are aware of Small Business Saturday and said the day encourages them to shop at said businesses all year round and 42 percent of consumers reportedly shopped at small, independently-owned business on Small Business Saturday did so with friends and family, and 83 percent reported encouraging others to also shop or dine small.

“Cities of Bristol, Tennessee and Virginia support our local businesses that create jobs, boost our local economy and preserve our communities; and advocacy groups, as well as public and private organizations across the country, have endorsed that the Saturday after Thanksgiving (be) Small Business Saturday,” included in the written proclamation. This year,Small Business Saturday falls on November 30th, 2019.
