She Loves Me

February 7–16 | Theatre Bristol

Love runs deep in Theatre Bristol's 55th Season. From new romance to love for family, community, country, and society, the season is full of laughs and heart-warming moments for the whole family, as well as thought-provoking and important reflection and connection.

The season kicks off with "She Loves Me," the award-winning romantic comedy musical inspired by the same story that brought "You've Got Mail" to the screen — though here love letters are exchanged to beautiful music in a 1930s perfumery. Directed by Steve Davis and Steve Baskett, celebrate Valentine's with "She Loves Me," weekends February 7-16.

BPL Theater — Selma

February 12 | Bristol Public Library

The Bristol Public Library is offering a free viewing of Selma (2014), starring David Oyelowo, Tom Wilkinson, and Carmen Ejogo. This historical drama film is based on the 1965 voting rights marches from Selma to Montgomery. Refreshments will be served!

Selma is the story of a movement. The film chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. Director Ava DuVernay’s Selma tells the real story of how the revered leader and visionary Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) and his brothers and sisters in the movement prompted change that forever altered history.

Read more about this workshop and Operation HOPE below:
Lack of financial literacy is a major cause of generational poverty. Poor credit, out of control debt, and other impacts of bad financial decisions and life events, can leave hardworking individuals struggling to move forward and make sense of it all.

The Credit and Money Management Program is designed to transform disabling financial mindsets—teaching people the language of money, how to navigate credit, and make better decisions with the money they have.

Through workshops and one-on-one counseling, our financial well-being coaches empower clients to take control of their finances, by creating a budget, reducing and paying off debt, and clearing errors from their credit reports. Seventy-two percent of clients see a FICO score increase; 25 percent achieve a 700+ FICO score after six months of participation.

With the HOPE 700-Credit-Score-Communities initiative, the focus on raising client FICO scores to 700 and bringing financial uplift to communities, is at the foundation of the Credit and Money Management Program—working to rehabilitate the credit, financial, and overall well being profile of the HOPE client, and the future bank borrower, and by extension, the community as a whole.

Legend of Lead Belly

Huddie Ledbetter was born into poverty, battled racism, and did time, but in spite of his early hardships, or perhaps because of them, he became one of the great musicians of the 20th century. We trace the life and career of Lead Belly, a man praised by critics and revered by artists, whose unique music crossed a host of genres and influenced countless industry legends, from The Beatles to Led Zeppelin to Nirvana and beyond. See how his talent, humanity, and determination defeated all that stood in his way to make his voice heard, then and now.
